Advanced Prostate Cancer

If a prostate cancer has grown to just breach the confines of the prostate, then it is described as locally advanced.

This may still be treatable by the combinations of hormones and localised radiotherapy. Patients with locally advanced disease will be referred to our associate oncologists for discussion of suitable treatment options.

Disease that has spread further beyond the immediate prostate surroundings, especially if it has deposits elsewhere in the body, is called advanced disease.

With many other cancers, if there are secondary deposits, then the outlook is poor, but fortunately with prostate cancer there are still treatment options.

Commonly, these will involve hormone therapy which has been proven to be an extremely effective way of slowing the disease growth. Chemotherapy may also be needed and is improving all the time. Discussion with our oncologists would be undertaken if chemotherapy was needed.

Advanced prostate cancer cannot be cured as yet but with the combined regimen of treatments it can be slowed, by impeding the tumours progress for a prolonged period.
