What is the prostate?

The prostate is a gland found only in men. It's about the size of a chestnut and is located just under the bladder, surrounding the urethra - the pipe that carries urine out through the penis.

Its main job is to produce the bulk of a man’s seminal fluid which is mixed with sperm to make semen. It also produces substances to protect sperm and aid fertility.

The prostate does not make hormones and is not involved in libido or erections.
